Calida deJongCalida deJong, Program Director

Able Sail Toronto has hired a permanent part time staffperson, Calida deJong. Calida is an Occupational Therapist and will be Program Director, Able Sail Toronto.

Calida’s first exposure to sailing was during a Work-Study program at Able Sail Kingston where she fell in love with sailing. Being out on the water with an amazing group of sailors with diverse abilities allowed Calida to understand the power of sailing to bring joy, autonomy and access to those who experience barriers to their activities.

In addition to companion sailing, Calida performed transfers, assisted members with donning and doffing life jackets, etc. Members at ABK that Calida worked with included those with blindness, spinal cord injury, acquired brain injury, developmental disabilities, cerebral palsy and other disabilities.

In 2018 Calida graduated from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario with a Masters of Science in Occupational Therapy (MScOT).

Calida consulted as a School Health Occupational Therapist for the Ottawa-Carlton District School Board and the Ottawa Catholic School Board focusing on the pediatric population. She previously worked at Providence Care Hospital in their Community Connections Recovery Program and as a Patient Assistant on the Complex Medical Management and Palliative Care units.

Calida takes a strengths-based approach to anything and everything involving (dis)ability and is very excited to be working for an organization that brings so much joy into the life of those experiencing disability.
